Things You Should Know Before Shopping for Your Wedding Gown

Keep an Open Mind

It is okay to come into the store with ideas of what your perfect gown will be. However, we have a wide variety of current fashions, so don’t hesitate to try on different styles. You may find that your perfect gown is actually quite different than you first thought.

Sizing

Bridal is notoriously cut small. Be prepared to not be your usual dress size and do not let it affect you. Bridal is usually cut about two sizes smaller. If you are normally a dress size of 14, you could be a size 18 in bridal.

The Entourage

Bringing special family members and friends with you to your appointment can be very supportive and exciting, but too large of a group can create a very stressful experience for the bride. Pick selectively who you want to come with you. Just like a party, if it’s too crowded, it’s no fun.

Timeline

It can take up to six months for a dress to arrive after it has been ordered, keep this in mind when you decide to start looking. You may also need alterations. Most specialists recommend looking for your wedding gown at least eight months in advance. However, if this timeline does not fit, do not fret, as, at Bella Mia Bridal, we’ll do our very best to accommodate your wedding day. As well, we have an off the rack collection, called One and Only’s, which can be purchased that day. This collection comes in a variety of styles and sizes, ranging from 16-36 (based on availability).

No Undies, No Service!

Bella Mia Bridal is a no-commando zone! When coming to try on wedding gowns, remember to wear proper undergarments. Be respectful of the fact that you are not the only one trying on these gowns.

Deposit Required

Once you have found your dream dress, you’ll need a 50% deposit to order your gown.

Alterations

Once your gown has arrived, you may need alterations to make your dream dress fit you like a glove. At Bella Mia, we offer consultations with our associate seamstress, but you are always free to take your gown to another seamstress if you choose. Give yourself about 12 weeks time prior to your wedding, for alterations. This will ensure that the seamstress will allow for plenty of time in her schedule for your fittings. As well, you should purchase and wear any special undergarments and shoes, chosen for your wedding day, prior to your first fitting.
